Two-Week Intensive Training Session for Indigenous Peoples in Nuuk, Greenland, 17 31 July 2006
Indigenous Peoples in the International System
Are you indigenous and are looking to become more knowledgeable of how the international system affects indigenous peoples, and how the international system can be used to assist in promoting the rights of your people and other indigenous peoples around the world?
Are you involved in local advocacy of your people and in the promotion of their human rights, but feel you need better negotiations, conflict resolution, and diplomacy skills?
Would you like to gain a deeper understanding from experienced and committed indigenous faculty of the myriad of international legal instruments, covenants, and organizations that impact upon indigenous peoples?
If so, and if you have demonstrated grassroots experience in local activism and human rights promotion, as well as some limited international experience, ITCIP invites you to submit a serious application to the upcoming session to be held in Nuuk, Greenland, July 17 to 31, 2006.
Successful applicants should be prepared for a very intensive 2 weeks of study, lectures, participatory learning, group work, and sharing of case studies from each of the participants local situation.
Successful applicants will be asked to contribute financially to the costs of their participation. If your organization or another sponsor can provide some travel funding for you, please let us know. We understand that most applicants will not have the resources to travel to Greenland, and we try to assist each of these applicants with the cost of travel and living expenses in Nuuk. At a minimum, each participant, however, will be required to raise their own funding for visa procurement, and travel from their home to their nearest airport.
The July 2006 training session will be held in the English language and, as such, all applicants must demonstrate a proficiency in the language.
Some of the other criteria that will be used to select training participants include intermediate level of experience (i.e. international experts of indigenous issues may not be selected), local advocacy experience, other advocacy experience, approximate gender parity, diversity of applicants based on indigenous background and country of residence, quality of references, and quality of written submissions on the application form.
