Summit Press, 20 December, 2014.- Representatives of various organizations of civil society, indigenous and workers of Peru and the world, reaffirmed in Lima its willingness to draw the attention of States to take concrete action on climate change.
The final day of the People's Summit, organized in parallel to the Twentieth Conference of the Parties COP 20, culminated with the delivery of the baton to Jacqueline Balvet, representative of ATTAC France. She is one of many who will be leading the organization of the People's Summit in Paris in December 2015.
The closure of the People's Summit was preceded by the World March in Defense of Mother Earth, mobilization which was attended by about 15,000 people. The march included representatives from various organizations, movements, platforms, networks and Peruvian and international social and cultural collectives made up of unions, women, peasants, indigenous peoples, youth, environmental and religions.
This same convening power was expressed at the close of the summit and the Parque de la Exposición welcomed thousands of people over four days, from 8 to 11 December.
The Lima Declaration
The Declaration of Lima was then delivered to Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Minister of Environment of Peru and President of the COP 20, by the Political Committee who organized the Summit.
The document summarizes the social demands and stresses the responsibility of the climate crisis of global capitalism.
It contains a series of objections to the COP 20 itself which, according to the text-is driven by industrialized countries and large corporations, responsible for most of the greenhouse gas emissions that warm the planet.
The People's Summit, an event that was performed with minimal resources, ended around on Thursday 11 at 8 pm. The thirteen organizations that were in charge of the executive organization spoke on stage and were followed by many more.
The final speeches were all words of gratitude to the men and women who made the People's Summit possible and to all the delegations from over thirty countries around the world for coming.
The act that ended the Summit was conducted by a group of women who took the stage to sing their song of struggle: "the struggles and pains of women who battle for their rights."
The People's Summit achieved its goals: it brought together delegates from around the world and, drew global attention to climate change and opened new paths towards a more just planet.
The Summit was made possible by the collective work lasting many months. As stated by some leaders on stage: "it does not close, but opens a process of struggle that will not end in Paris 2015 and will go on until we save Mother Earth."
