- An International Committee to support the Peoples' Summit on Climate Change was formed in New York.
Servindi, 25 September, 2014.- International organizations committed to the defense of life, the environment and the rights of indigenous peoples will support the Alternative Summit to be held from 8 to 11 of December, 2014 in Lima.
To that end, on Monday, September 22, Peruvian spokespersons of the Political Commission of the summit organizers and representatives of various international networks interested in joining the process met in New York City.
Spokesmen and spokeswoman accredited by the Summit, Antolin Huascar, Dante Dante Alfaro and Rosa Guillén, met with representatives of the Alliance for Global Justice, the Global Campaign for Climate Justice, Jubilee South Asia Pacific, 350.org, Oxfam, Indigenous Peoples Movement for Self-Determination and Liberation (IPMSDL Asia), Central of Workers (CTA Argentina), Building Bridges and Bolivian Campaign Against Climate Change, among others.
The goal was to prepare the way for the alternative People's Summit in Lima. The participants agreed to launch an invitation to global networks and organizations and to sign a statement.
Participants reaffirmed their support for the People's Summit, to be held parallel to the United Nations COP20, and agreed to join forces for a Global March in Defense of Mother Earth set for the 10th of December.
In early October, the members of the International Committee will define a contact person for coordinations with the Political Committee of the Summit in Peru.
The International Committee –so named- has been preceded by a statement titled: In Lima we change the system, not the climate!, issued on August 13, 2014 as a document of commitment to the People's Summit signed by the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (CSA), Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC), Latin American Coordination of Rural Organizations (CLOC), Group Jubilee South / Americas, World March of Women, Transnational Institute (TNI) and The Via Campesina, among others.
